FAQs

How long will it be until they die?

This is one of the most challenging questions families and friends ask me. Of course we want to get every moment possible with our loved ones. Unfortunately there is no way to know for sure how long someone has. Health Care Professionals often use the PPS (Palliative Performance Scale) to understand where someone is in the dying process. A little rule of thumb I use is that if we are seeing changes week to week, theres probably weeks of life. If we are seeing changes day to day, then there are probably days of life, but there is just no way to know for sure.

Isn’t this work depressing?

It is an absolute honour to work with people and their family/friends at the end of life. Life is beautiful during all of it’s stages and some of the most beautiful moments occur at the end. I am thankful for every opportunity to do this work. The end of life deserves as much thought and planning as the beginning.

What is Legacy Planning?

Legacy Planning is thinking about what to leave of yourself for others. It could be a special gift, but it could also be a way of organizing someones things to serve as a memory. It can be as simple as a voice recording or as complex as designing a table made from travel spoons. Legacy planning is as creative we are.

What is Advanced Care Planning?

Advanced Care Planning is talking about and planning for future health care decisions. It helps your substitute decision maker understand what you would and would not be comfortable with. Would you want to be intubated? Who will tell the medical team this if you can’t? Visit https://www.advancecareplanningontario.ca/ for more information on Advanced Care Planning in Ontario.
